Tromøy lies as a long, low archipelago island outside Arendal: pine forest, smooth rock, and sea on every side. Turid and Erik wanted it small. Around 30 guests, all with their own cabin at the same spot on the island, including Lisa and me. No driving back and forth, no one having to leave early. It wasn't meant to be an event, it was meant to be a few days where everyone was together.
I worked together with Lisa this day: she photographed, I did both video and photo. We split the tasks so that no moment slipped under the radar, and so that neither of us had to ask the couple to pose. Because that's what we'd agreed on from the start: no posed pictures. Just what actually happened.
Turid and Erik wanted a first look and portraits *before* the ceremony. It's a decision I like. It takes the pressure off the schedule, and it gives the couple a quiet hour together while the rest of the day still lies ahead. We started on the dock. Erik stood alone for a while looking out over Skagerrak. When Turid came walking up behind him, she laughed before he'd even turned around. The rest became a half hour where we hardly needed to do anything. We walked through the archipelago, over a wooden bridge, through the pine trees. They walked ahead. We captured what we saw.
The ceremony was outdoors, under a birch arch decorated with peach-colored zinnia, blue thistles and autumn greenery. Turid had arranged all the flowers herself: the bouquet, Erik's boutonnière, the bridesmaids' wreaths, the table arrangements inside. It's one of those things that isn't visible right away but explains why everything fits together: one person had taken ownership of the visuals, and it showed.
